The Junior League continually engages our members in volunteer service that supports our community. Our service projects are the centerpiece of our organization and continues to be the most valuable and rewarding part of membership.

The Children’s Place

In 1978, The Children’s Place began providing critical early intervention services to the community’s youngest members who had suffered abuse and neglect. The Children’s Place was one of the first groups to understand the concept of child abuse and remains unique within the Kansas City metropolitan area with its continued focus on young children. As is often stated, it takes a village to raise a child, and The Children’s Place believes that it will take a village to help heal a child.

Each child served has a unique voice; blended together, all the children who pass through their doors create the sound of hope for a brighter, happier, safer future. As a recognized leader in the treatment of children traumatized by abuse and neglect, the services provided are of the highest quality with accreditation received from The Joint Commission and the National Associate of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The Day Treatment Program is a comprehensive multidisciplinary program created for children ages 12 months to six years. The majority of children who attend the Day Treatment Program are referred through the Children’s Service Workers at the Children’s Division and are in their custody. A unique, therapeutic classroom setting offers an environment that is stable, safe, and nurturing.  The Day Treatment Program currently has approximately 60 children. Each child receives an individualized program of speech and occupational therapy, nutritional assessment, psychological/psychiatric evaluations and diagnosis, play therapy and socialization, counseling, and education. In addition, the program provides for some of the physical needs of the children. All children in this program are picked up & dropped off at their house by a bus every weekday. Also, they receive a healthy and nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day.

Outpatient Treatment Services provides evaluations and therapy to help parents or caretakers learn healthy and effective coping skills to ensure the health, safety, and optimal growth of children ages three months to eight years.

Determining the best treatment option begins with an evaluation. The treatment staff at The Children’s Place is made up of licensed, Masters level clinical social workers and counselors, and a consulting child psychiatrist.
