Membership in Junior Service League is an involvement in a program of community leadership and an opening to opportunities of both service to others and personal growth.Through an organization such as Junior Service League, varying talents and experiences are brought into strong focus on all types of community needs.

Junior Service League hosts many exciting programs, special events and fundraisers annually to support our community projects and our partnered agencies. Our beautiful clubhouse is often the site of our events and is available for rent.

What We're Up To


The Junior League continually engages our members in volunteer service that supports our community. Our service projects are the centerpiece of our organization and continues to be the most valuable and rewarding part of membership.

JSL in the Community

The Junior Service League of Independence has been training women to be community leaders since 1945. JSL was founded with a vision to create opportunities for women to contribute to their community through volunteer service and financial support. Service has continued to be part of JSL’s vision through the years and members are still leaders in the community today.


The true leaders in our community are the individuals whose insights, ideas and relationships enable them to change the lives of those who live in their neighborhoods and cities for the better. Training women to become community leaders is in our DNA.


Current JSL members are community leaders and have served in many leadership positions in the community including:

  • Judy Forrester – Past Chair of Truman Heartland Community Foundation Board

  • Mary House – President of Kiwanis Club of Independence
  • Liz McClure – Past Chair of Drumm Farm Center for Children Board
  • Patti Pretti – President of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses
  • Michele Shanahan DeMoss – President & Founder of Blair’s Foster Socks
  • Sue Shineman – President of Independence Chapter of the AAUW & President Elect of Missouri State AAUW
  • Gloria Smith – President of Jackson County Historical Society Board

The Junior Service League clubhouse is a great space for corporate events, weddings, wedding receptions, committee meetings, graduation parties, birthday parties, or any other type of event. Whether the event calls for a large seated area for 150 or table seating for 120 we have all you need; including a prep kitchen, tables, chairs, and Wi-Fi make this the ideal place for your event centered in the heart of Independence MO.
