Play, Come Play With Us Event

Play, Come Play With Us Event

The 2017-2018 Provisional Class of Junior Service League of Independence organized the Play, Come Play With Us Event and donation drives to benefit The Children’s Place. The event consisted of different stations to make DIY play therapy items as well as assembling snack packs. The donation drives collected play therapy items and snack pack food.

The Children’s Place is a nurturing, caring place for young children age 12 months – 6 years who have experienced abuse, neglect, and other traumas. The Children’s Place was one of the first groups to understand the concept of child abuse and remains unique within the Kansas City metropolitan area with its continued focus on young children. As is often stated, it takes a village to raise a child and The Children’s Place believes that it takes a village to help heal a child as well. Therapists, teachers, staff and volunteers work together to make sure these children can thrive in their communities and have a successful life.

During the event, we made the following play therapy items:

  • 44 calm down sensory bottles (water bottles with different items that move inside such as buttons, sequins, glitter and water beads)
  • 22 bags of different colored Play-Doh
  • 15 bags of dyed moon sand
  • 10 bags of dyed rice
  • 8 bags of kinetic sand

The Children’s Place used the dyed rice in their large sensory bin table and the Play-Doh was used in every classroom for play and interaction. The calm down sensory bottles allow the children to use their senses to make sense of the world around them and allow their brains to make important connections. The moon sand and kinetic sand was used by therapists during play therapy.

The Children’s Place relies on food donations from the community for their food pack program.  During the event, we assembled 140 snack packs that were donated to The Children’s Place. Every Friday, a food pack is sent home with every child in their day treatment program.  All the leftover food was donated to their food pantry.

Junior Service League also donated various play therapy items to The Children’s Place such as modeling clay, scoopers, funnels, bowls, Play-Doh, ice cube trays, colanders, measuring cups, wooden modeling clay tools and lots of crayons, markers, etc.

The event received generous donations which were used to purchase a sensory bin table for therapists, storybooks for the day treatment program, and additional food for their food pantry. The storybooks will be read as part of the day treatment curriculum and they will go home with the kids as their “forever books.”
